Make Japanese vocabulary part of your daily routine.

Learning a word is easier when you can connect its spelling, meaning, and use. RecallLoom brings those pieces together in a ready-to-import Anki deck, with natural English explanations to help you make sense of the Japanese you're studying.

Whether you're working toward JLPT N5 or building your beginner vocabulary alongside a class or textbook, you can open the deck and focus on your next review.

More ways to work with each word

  • Read it. Practice recognizing the Japanese word and recalling its reading and meaning.
  • Recall it. Start with the English meaning and try to bring the Japanese word to mind.
  • Hear it. Use the included word audio to connect written forms with spoken readings.
  • See it in context. Explore 1,241 Japanese–English example pairs, plus usage notes and related expressions where included.

Clear American English explanations keep the focus on learning Japanese. Grammar terms are explained in the built-in guide, and Japanese cultural references retain their context.

Inside your download

  • 926 vocabulary entries, each with three practice cards: Kana Recognition, Word Reading, and Meaning and Audio Recall.
  • Word audio for 924 entries and readings to support your review.
  • 2,778 practice cards + 3 English guide cards—three ways to practice each entry.
  • One .apkg file with the deck, audio, and getting-started guide together.

Import the file into Anki, open Start Here — User Guide, and begin with a manageable daily review. Best suited to learners who can already read hiragana and katakana.

A few helpful details

This is a digital vocabulary deck for Anki; the app is purchased or installed separately. Cards use Anki's familiar reveal-and-rate format. Audio covers individual words, not example sentences; 〜様 and 〜さん are text-only, and some entries with multiple readings include a recording of one reading. Automatic audio playback can be turned off in the deck options if you prefer to recall first.

Use this deck alongside your grammar and listening practice. It is an independent N5 study resource, not an official JLPT list or a guarantee of exam coverage. Pitch-number annotations are included as reference notes; this is not a verified pitch-accent course.

Xefjord's Complete Language Series was created with the mission of providing free language learning courses for every known living language. Xefjord was driven to start this project because he believes that every culture is inherently valuable and important to our humanity and global well being, and that languages are the gateway towards preserving and promoting those cultures.

Because of its popularity, ease of use, and open source nature Xefjord decided to create all his courses on the digital flashcard program Anki. These courses were created with the purpose of giving learners a survival level introduction to their language of choice while also granting them the tools to continue learning with and expanding upon the functionality of Anki afterwards.

There is only one option for learning Japanese.

This Japanese course teaches standard Japanese as one might hear in Tokyo, Japan with Hiragana (Phonetic Syllabary) and Kanji (Chinese Characters).

This course includes one deck not made by me but modified to fit my format:
